  • Yao received her bachelor's degree in Pharmacy from China Pharmaceutical University in 2016. She did her Ph.D. at Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Feng-Ling Qing, where her research focused on developing electrochemical/photoredox fluoroalkylations. In 2021, she joined Prof. Todd Hyster's lab at Cornell University for her postdoctoral research and moved to Princeton University with the Hyster lab in 2023. In the Hyster lab, Yao investigated the photoenzymatic non-natural reactions using 'ene' reductases and PLP-dependent enzymes. In the van der Donk lab, her focus is on exploring the substrate promiscuity of lanthipeptide synthetase and the discovery of non-natural lanthipeptides.
