Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Our mission is to create and maintain a welcoming, equitable, and diverse environment, without prejudice or discrimination, where group members can freely express their opinions in a manner that is not offensive to others.

The van der Donk group values the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, and professionalism as expressed on the Department of Chemistry’s website:

“We recognize diversity in many ways, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability status, national origin, religion, political orientation and socio-economic background. We understand that diverse talent is an asset that results in more effective research and teaching. We believe in a scientific culture with the highest standards of professionalism, that promotes psychological safety and that encourages respect for others so that everyone can bring their best creative selves to our group.”

Our lab is based in Urbana, Illinois on what was the traditional lands of the Peoria, Kaskaskia, Piankashaw, Wea, Miami, Mascoutin, Odawa, Sauk, Mesquaki, Kickapoo, Potawatomi, Ojibwe, and Chickasaw Nations prior to their forced removal. We recognize and support the people and stories of these Nations and their continued struggles for survival and identity.
