Vanessa was born and raised in Monterey Bay, California. She received a B.S. in Chemistry from Sonoma State University. At SSU, she worked under Professor Steven C. Farmer to synthesize carbazole derivatives and create a general synthesis route for natural products containing the carbazole ring structure. She joined the van der Donk group in the Fall of 2023.
