Songyi graduated from Northeast Electric Power University in China with a B.S. degree in chemistry. Following that, he spent a year and a half working as a research assistant at the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He started his Ph.D. career at the University of South Florida in 2018 under the supervision of Prof. Jianfeng Cai. Songyi’s doctoral research focused on design and synthesis of novel helical foldamers, and small molecule inhibitors based on the structure of γ-AApeptides potentially targeting various viruses as well as other PPIs. In the van der Donk lab, Songyi is working on non-reactive analogs of intermediates formed during RiPP biosynthesis as well as developing new-to-nature hybrid RiPPs by chimeric leader peptides.
